Plantago depressa is an annual or biennial herb in the genus Plantago of the family Plantaginaceae, and it is also one of the plant sources of the common Chinese medicinal materials Plantain herb and Plantain seed. It is distributed in most parts of China, and mostly grows in sunny and moist places such as field edges, roadsides, wasteland and hillsides. Because it often appears on both sides of roads, people also collectively call this type of plant Plantain herb.

In terms of morphology, Plantago depressa is a taproot plant with an obvious main root, which is clearly different from the common Plantago with fibrous roots, and this is also one of the key points for distinguishing the two. Its leaves are basal and arranged in a rosette, mostly elliptical or ovate-lanceolate, with irregular wavy teeth along the edges. The spike that emerges during the flowering period is slender and upright, with small and densely packed flowers. The fruit is a capsule, and when mature it contains many small dark brown seeds, which are the medicinal Plantain seed.

In terms of application value, both the whole plant and the seeds of Plantago depressa can be used as medicine. Its medicinal nature tends to be cold and cool, and traditionally it is often used in related prescriptions for effects such as clearing heat, promoting diuresis and dispelling phlegm. In addition, the tender leaves that sprout in spring are also a wild vegetable. After blanching, they can be served as a cold dish, used as filling or cooked in soup, with a mild taste.

It should be noted that when collecting in the wild, it must be distinguished from similar-looking species such as Plantago asiatica and Plantago major, and roadside environments that have been sprayed with pesticides should be avoided. Before using it as a medicinal material, it is best to have it professionally identified and to use it in measured amounts under a doctor's guidance. It is not advisable to take large amounts on one's own.
