"Wolf dog" is not the formal name of a single breed, but a folk umbrella term for dogs that look strikingly like wolves, the most typical example being the German Shepherd (German Shepherd Dog). These dogs are mostly medium-to-large breeds, with a wedge-shaped head and erect ears; their coats commonly feature a black saddle over tan limbs and belly, and their overall outline gives a steady, alert impression.

Common wolf dog breeds include the German Shepherd, the Kunming Dog, and the Wolf Blue Dog (Chinese blue wolfdog), as well as the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and the Saarloos Wolfdog, which were developed by crossing wolves with German Shepherds. The German Shepherd is highly obedient and steady in temperament, and has long served as a military and police dog, search-and-rescue dog, and guide dog; the Kunming Dog is a working breed developed in China, often used for patrol and public security duties; the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog looks even more like a wolf and is relatively independent in character.

Wolf dogs are generally intelligent, loyal, and highly alert, with a strong protective instinct toward their owners, but they also need socialization training from an early age to avoid excessive barking at strangers, or behaviors such as jumping on people or guarding food. They are energetic with high exercise needs; if they lack activity space and companionship for a long time, they easily develop anxiety or destructive behavior.

If you want to keep a wolf dog, it is best to first assess whether your living environment has enough activity space, and to arrange a daily walk or run; the double coat needs regular brushing, and shedding is noticeably heavier during coat-blowing season. In addition, breeds with wolf ancestry may be subject to ownership restrictions in some areas, so before getting one you should first confirm local regulations and obtain a healthy puppy through proper channels.
