The Red Parrot Cichlid is a tropical ornamental fish developed through crossbreeding and selective breeding, named for its bright red body color and mouth shaped much like a parrot's beak. It has a short, round body with a slightly raised head, swims in an endearing, clumsy way, and its overall orange-red color makes it very eye-catching in an aquarium, making it one of the most popular varieties on the ornamental fish market.

This fish's mouth does not close completely and has an inverted triangle shape, so it can only eat in small bites and is relatively weak at competing for food, yet it has a fairly lively temperament and likes to swim in groups. Its body color changes with water quality, lighting, and the amount of astaxanthin in its feed; in poor conditions the color may fade.

Keeping Red Parrot Cichlids requires keeping the water temperature stable, controlled within the range suitable for tropical fish, and avoiding sudden temperature changes. Water quality requirements are not especially strict, but the water should be changed regularly to keep it clean. For feeding, artificial compound feed can be chosen, and color-enhancing feed containing astaxanthin helps maintain a vivid body color.

There are many related types on the market, including individuals with yellowish or whitish body colors, as well as colorful varieties treated with artificial dyeing. When buying, it is advisable to give priority to fish with natural body color, no injuries on the body surface, and lively condition, while also checking whether the source is legitimate.

It should be noted that because of its special mouth structure, the Red Parrot Cichlid eats slowly and is not suitable for mixed keeping with aggressive fish that compete strongly for food; it also has certain requirements for dissolved oxygen in the water, so aeration equipment can be provided when necessary. As long as the environment is stable and feeding is proper, this fish is robust and easy to keep, making it very suitable for home aquarium keeping.
