Emperor banana, also known as tribute banana or millet banana, is a small variety of banana. It is said that in ancient times it was presented as a tribute, hence the name. Its fruit is shorter and plumper than ordinary bananas, with thin skin; when ripe, the flesh is soft, sticky and delicate, with a rich aroma and relatively high sweetness, making it very popular with consumers.

In terms of production area distribution, Emperor banana mainly grows in tropical and subtropical regions. In China, Hainan, Guangxi and other places are the main production areas, and it is also grown in parts of Guangdong, Yunnan and Fujian; overseas, it is relatively common in Southeast Asian countries. Hainan is warm all year round with abundant sunshine, while southern Guangxi has a humid climate and ample rainfall. These natural conditions are all very suitable for the growth of Emperor banana.

In terms of growing conditions, Emperor banana prefers a high-temperature, high-humidity environment and is afraid of low temperatures and frost. Planting sites generally require warm winters and no severe cold damage. The soil is best if it is sandy loam with deep soil layers, loose and fertile texture, and good drainage. Low-lying places that easily accumulate water are not conducive to the growth of banana plants and are generally not suitable for planting.

In terms of planting management, fruit farmers mostly choose disease-free, healthy tissue-cultured seedlings for planting. During the growing period, water and nutrient supply must be ensured, while wind protection and pest and disease control must also be done well. Emperor banana has thin skin and is easily bruised during long-distance transport, so it is usually harvested when the fruit is 70% to 80% ripe, then sold on the market after ripening turns it yellow.

When selecting, you can look at the peel color and feel. Ripe Emperor bananas have golden-yellow skin and a natural fruity fragrance. A small number of black spots on the surface often indicates full ripening and a sweeter taste, while ones that are entirely black, soft and rotten are not recommended for purchase. Because the skin is thin and it does not keep well, after buying it is best to place it in a cool, ventilated place and eat it as soon as possible.
