The production areas of longan are concentrated in southern China and the tropical regions of Southeast Asia
Longan, also known as longan dried fruit, is a dried fruit made from fresh longan as the raw material, processed through drying and other procedures. It can be eaten directly as a snack and is also commonly used in soups, congee and tea. In everyday speech, longan usually refers to the fresh fruit, while guiyuan generally refers to the processed dried product; the two are actually different forms produced by the same fruit tree.
The production areas of longan are concentrated in warm and humid climates, with the most concentrated areas in South China and Southwest China. Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hainan and Taiwan, China all have large-scale plantings, and some river valley areas in Sichuan and Yunnan also cultivate it. These traditional production areas have a long history of cultivation, and the longan they produce has large fruit and thick flesh, making it an important source of raw material for processing dried longan. Abroad, tropical countries such as Thailand and Vietnam also produce longan, and their dried longan products are also relatively common on the market.
From the perspective of growing conditions, longan prefers a high-temperature, humid and sunny environment and is not tolerant of severe cold. If frost occurs in winter, it will affect tree vigor and fruit quality, so production areas are mostly distributed in subtropical and tropical low-altitude hilly and plain areas. As for soil, red soil or sandy loam with deep soil layers and good drainage is more suitable. Mature orchards also need attention to pruning and fruit thinning to ensure the plumpness of the fruit.
When selecting longan, you can pay attention to whether the flesh color is natural, whether the grains are plump, and whether the smell is fresh and free of off-odors. Those with dry and intact shells generally have more reliable quality. Because varieties and processing methods differ among production areas, longan will vary in sweetness and flesh thickness. Daily soup-making and direct eating have different priorities for taste, so simply choose according to the intended use.
