The king rat snake is the common name for the king rat snake (Elaphe carinata), a large non-venomous snake named for the pattern on its head that resembles the Chinese character for "king." It is widely distributed in China, has a fierce temperament, and is characterized by fast growth, a varied diet, and strong adaptability, making it one of the snake species more commonly bred in captivity in the country.

To farm king rat snakes, you first need to build suitable housing; common forms include snake boxes, snake pits, and indoor temperature-controlled snake rooms. The snake house should be well ventilated and easy to clean, and should be equipped with hiding burrows and water dishes. The temperature should be kept at around 28 to 30 degrees C, avoiding excessive day-night temperature differences, which can easily trigger respiratory problems.

The king rat snake has a broad diet. At the juvenile stage, quail eggs and pinky mice can be fed, while adult snakes mainly eat white mice, frogs, and chicks, and feeding should be done at fixed times and in fixed amounts. The king rat snake is oviparous, so during the breeding season, females about to lay eggs should be housed separately, and stable temperature and humidity should be maintained during incubation. After hatching, the young snakes need to be kept separately to prevent them from being eaten by larger snakes.

In daily management, leftover bait, feces, and shed snake skins should be cleaned up promptly, water quality should be kept clean, and the snakes' condition should be observed regularly. Individuals showing abnormalities in the mouth or breathing should be isolated and handled as soon as possible, while basic measures such as escape prevention and rodent control should also be carried out.

It should be noted that the king rat snake is a protected wild animal. Before starting farming, you should understand local regulations, handle the relevant procedures in accordance with the law, and obtain breeding stock through proper channels. On the premise of compliant operation, products from king rat snake farming can be used for food, snake skin processing, and other fields, but market conditions fluctuate greatly, so it is advisable to investigate sales channels in advance and proceed according to your means.
