Winter melon is a traditional gourd vegetable widely cultivated in China. It is generally believed to have originated in tropical Asia and southern China, and it has a long history of cultivation. It is highly adaptable, produces large fruit that stores and ships well, and today it is grown throughout both northern and southern China, making it one of the common vegetables on the market in summer and autumn.

In terms of distribution, winter melon production areas are mainly concentrated along the Yangtze River basin and areas to its south. Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian and other places are traditional production areas with mature cultivation management and high market recognition. Areas north of the Yangtze River, such as Henan, Shandong and Hebei, also have considerable-scale cultivation, mostly supplying nearby markets in summer and autumn.

Winter melon prefers warmth and cannot tolerate cold. Throughout its growing period it needs ample temperature, sunlight and water, so production areas are mostly located in regions with a warm climate and a long frost-free period. In recent years, places such as Hainan have also taken advantage of warm winter climate conditions to develop off-season cultivation, so that fresh winter melon can continue to be supplied on the market during winter and spring.

Different production areas focus on different cultivated varieties. Large winter melons have large fruit and store well, while small winter melons are early-maturing with delicate flesh. Types such as green-skinned and powdery-skinned also differ in appearance and taste, and consumers can choose flexibly according to their needs.

When selecting winter melon from a production area, first check whether the skin is intact and has a layer of white bloom, then weigh it in your hand; those with a heavy feel and a firm body are usually of better quality. Winter melon has a mild, refreshing flesh, is suitable for making soup or stir-frying, and can also be processed into products such as winter melon candy and winter melon tea, giving it a very wide range of uses.
