The Great Dane is one of the largest dog breeds in the world, with impressive shoulder height and weight. Although it looks tall and mighty, its personality stands in sharp contrast to its build: it is gentle in temperament and steady in manner, which is why it is often called the gentle giant. Overall, the Great Dane is friendly and affectionate toward its family and has low aggression, making it a large companion dog suitable for family life.

The Great Dane is very loyal to its owner, likes to follow the family around, and craves companionship; being left alone for long periods can easily make it anxious. It is usually very patient with children and can tolerate their playful behavior, but because of its huge size, it is best for an adult to supervise during play to avoid accidentally knocking over a young child. This clingy personality also means that owners need to devote a good deal of time to keeping it company.

Around strangers, the Great Dane stays somewhat alert, but it is not a breed that likes to bark. It mainly relies on its imposing appearance to deter intruders rather than actively attacking. After good socialization training, it can tell the difference between a normal visitor and an unusual situation, and behaves steadily and calmly.

The Great Dane is rather sensitive by nature, so training should focus on gentle but firm positive guidance; rough scolding or hitting can easily make it timid or resistant. Socialization training in puppyhood is especially important, and exposure to different people and environments helps it develop a confident, stable personality. As an adult, its exercise needs are moderate; a regular daily walk is enough, and long periods of intense running are not advisable, as they can put a strain on its bones and joints.
