Differences Between Scutellaria barbata and Oldenlandia diffusa and an Introduction to Their Cultivation Methods
Scutellaria barbata (barbed skullcap) and Oldenlandia diffusa (white-flowered snake-tongue herb) are common heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs in traditional Chinese medicine, and the two are often paired together in clinical formulas, making them a very popular herbal pair. Scutellaria barbata is a perennial herb in the Lamiaceae family, genus Scutellaria, also known as bingtoucao or narrow-leaved Hanxin's herb; Oldenlandia diffusa is an annual herb in the Rubiaceae family, popularly called sheshecao or shezongguan.
In appearance, the two differ quite noticeably. Scutellaria barbata has a four-angled stem, opposite leaves, and small blue-purple flowers, and mostly grows in moist environments such as field edges and beside streams and ditches; Oldenlandia diffusa has a slender plant body, linear leaves, and small white flowers, and is mainly distributed on damp grasslands and field ridges in South China and the Jiangnan region. Familiarity with these features makes it easy to avoid misidentifying them in the field.
As for artificial cultivation, both prefer a warm and humid climate and are generally propagated mainly by seed. After sowing Scutellaria barbata, the soil must be kept moist, and after seedlings emerge, weeds should be removed and seedlings thinned in good time; Oldenlandia diffusa is afraid of both drought and waterlogging during its growing period, so drainage and irrigation management must keep pace, and only with sufficient base fertilizer and timely topdressing is it easier to obtain a relatively high yield.
Both herbs are noted for clearing heat, detoxifying, and draining dampness, and they often appear in formulas for conditions such as sore throat and sores or swellings, though actual use must be carried out under a physician's guidance. With the growth in demand in the Chinese medicinal herb market, many farmers cultivate them as specialty medicinal herbs, and as long as field management is done well, both yield and quality are fairly well assured.
