Passion fruit production areas are mainly distributed across Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian and other places
Passion fruit, also known as egg fruit or passionflower, originated in the South America region and is a tropical and subtropical vine fruit tree. It prefers a warm, humid climate and cannot tolerate frost, so passion fruit production areas around the world are mostly concentrated in warm low-latitude regions, such as South America, Southeast Asia and parts of Africa.
In China, passion fruit growing areas are mainly distributed in Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan and other provinces. Among them, Guangxi is a relatively large production area, and the fruit produced around Yulin has a rich aroma, with a fairly mature growing and processing system already established locally. Yunnan, Fujian and other places rely on mountainous and coastal climates, and their fruit also has its own distinctive sweetness, acidity and flavor.
Taiwan, China is also an important passion fruit production area, and the area around Puli in Nantou has a long history of cultivation, making it a well-known hometown of passion fruit. Local production areas place importance on healthy seedlings and field management; the fruit has thin skin and abundant aroma, and fresh fruit is supplied in both summer and autumn.
The light, temperature and soil conditions of the production area directly affect the quality of passion fruit. On sunny hilly slopes with good drainage, the sugar-to-acid ratio of the fruit is more balanced and the aroma is more pronounced. When purchasing, consumers may want to pay attention to the origin information and judge freshness by combining the fruit's weight, color and aroma; fresh passion fruit is suitable both for eating fresh and is often used for juicing, making desserts and seasoning.
