Asafoetida is a resin secreted by plants of the genus Ferula in the Apiaceae family. It has a pungent, sharp odor and is traditionally used mainly as medicine. What anglers commonly call asafoetida fishing does not mean putting asafoetida directly on a hook; rather, it is used as a scent-type feeding attractant, mixed in very small amounts into bait or groundbait to improve the fish-attracting effect through its distinctive smell.

The odor of asafoetida has strong penetrating power and spreads quickly after entering the water, and to a certain extent it can stimulate the sense of smell of fish, giving it a good feeding-attractant effect on common freshwater fish such as crucian carp and common carp. It is therefore often used in seasons when the water temperature is rather low and fish are feeding weakly, or in situations where fish density is not high and fish-attracting ability needs to be strengthened.

When using it, the key is to use too little rather than too much. Generally, asafoetida can first be dissolved in baijiu or warm water, then mixed into the bait in a very small ratio. There are also finished products on the market, such as asafoetida honey and asafoetida liquor, that can be added directly. If the amount used is too large, the strong odor can instead easily make the school of fish wary and scatter the shoal, so the loss outweighs the gain.

It should be noted that asafoetida is only an auxiliary method, not a cure-all. In actual fishing, adjustments still need to be made according to the weather, the fishing position and the condition of the base bait. Fish conditions vary greatly between different waters, so it is advisable to try it first on a small scale and decide whether to continue using it after observing the fish's feeding response. In addition, plants of the genus Ferula are also related to a rare edible mushroom. The white Ferula mushroom introduced on this site is named because in the wild it mostly grows near Ferula plants.
