An Introduction to the Characteristics and Economic Value of the Borneol Camphor Tree
The borneol camphor tree is a special type of camphor tree in the genus Cinnamomum of the family Lauraceae that is rich in natural d-borneol. It gets its name because natural borneol can be extracted from its branches and leaves, and it is an important special-purpose economic forest tree species in China. It resembles the common camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) in appearance, but the chemical composition of its branches and leaves differs markedly, and its economic value is also higher.
The borneol camphor tree prefers a warm and humid climate and is mostly distributed in southern provinces such as Jiangxi and Hunan. It grows best in deep, well-drained acidic or slightly acidic soil. The plant is evergreen year-round, and its tree form is similar to that of ordinary camphor trees. After the leaves are rubbed, they give off an obvious cool, refreshing fragrance, which is also one of the intuitive ways to make a preliminary judgment of its borneol content.
Its core value lies in the natural borneol extracted from its branches and leaves, namely d-borneol. Natural borneol is an important raw material for the pharmaceutical, daily chemical, and fragrance industries, with a wide range of uses and relatively stable market demand. Therefore, the borneol camphor tree is regarded as one of the afforestation tree species with relatively good economic returns, and many regions have incorporated it into the development of distinctive forest industries.
In terms of cultivation, the borneol camphor tree is mostly propagated by seed seedlings or cuttings. When planting, sunny plots with fertile soil should be selected, and routine management such as weeding, fertilizing, and pest and disease control should be carried out well. After the forest is established, the main harvest is branches and leaves, and borneol is extracted through distillation processing. During harvesting, care should be taken to do it moderately so as to ensure the continued healthy growth of the trees.
