The King of Flowers Is the Peony: Its Peerless Beauty and Cultural Significance
The king of flowers usually refers to the peony, a famous traditional Chinese flower that has enjoyed the reputation of being the king of flowers since ancient times. Peony blooms are large and magnificent, and people often describe their bearing as "national beauty and heavenly fragrance," so in traditional culture the peony has always symbolized wealth, good fortune and prosperity.
In terms of botanical characteristics, the peony is a perennial deciduous shrub with a rich range of flower colors, commonly including red, pink, white, purple, yellow and others. Its petals are layered and full, and when in full bloom it gives off a light, elegant fragrance. It generally blooms in late spring and early summer; a single flower does not last very long, but when the whole plant blooms at once the ornamental effect is quite spectacular.
There are many varieties of peony. Traditionally, famous cultivars such as Yaohuang and Weizi are the best known, and by flower form they can also be divided into different types such as single and double. Places such as Luoyang and Heze are famous for peonies, and every year when the flowers bloom they attract large numbers of visitors who make special trips to see them.
For care, peonies like a sunny, well-ventilated environment and are suitable for planting in loose, fertile, well-drained soil. They are fairly cold-hardy but dislike waterlogging, so watering should follow the principle of not watering until the soil is dry, and watering thoroughly when you do. With regular attention to pruning dead branches and withered leaves, the plant will stay healthy and strong.
Besides its ornamental value, the peony appears extremely often in painting, poetry and traditional patterns, and is a representative symbol of prosperity culture. Whether planted in the ground in a courtyard or displayed in a pot, the peony can add a touch of grand elegance to its surroundings.
