The azalea, also known as yingshanhong, is the collective name for plants in the genus Rhododendron of the family Ericaceae, and it is also one of China's traditional famous flowers. It has a great many varieties, with flower colors including red, pink, white, purple and more; it can be planted in the ground in a courtyard or grown in pots on a balcony or indoors, and it has very high ornamental value.

To grow azaleas, the first thing is to choose the right soil; they like loose, fertile, well-drained acidic soil, and alkaline or heavy clay soil should be avoided. Azaleas like a semi-shaded environment, and the most suitable spot is usually one with bright light but no direct blazing sun; in summer, when the light is intense, shade them properly so the leaves are not scorched and singed.

Water by the principle of letting the soil dry before watering and then soaking it thoroughly: wait until the surface of the potting soil is dry, then water thoroughly in one go, avoiding long-term waterlogging that causes root rot; when the weather is dry, you can spray water on the leaves and the surrounding area to raise humidity. Azaleas like fertilizer but fear strong fertilizer; during the growing season, apply dilute fertilizer frequently, and supplementing with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before and after flowering helps them bloom; after flowering, promptly cut off spent flowers and leggy branches to reduce nutrient consumption.

Many flower lovers have encountered azalea leaf tips turning yellow and leaves dropping, which is mostly related to soil that is too alkaline, overwatering or air that is too dry; it can be eased by improving the soil's acidity and alkalinity and adjusting the amount of water given. As long as you grasp the key points of acidic soil, a semi-shaded environment and reasonable water and fertilizer, azaleas will grow with lush branches and leaves and bloom all over the pot year after year.
