Jade raw stone is a granular mineral potting medium, named for its warm luster and appearance resembling small pieces of jade. It is hard in texture and stable in structure, with relatively large gaps between the granules; after watering, drainage is smooth, and it does not easily powderize or deform even with long-term use. In potted plants that emphasize air permeability and drainage, such as orchids and succulents, it is often used as a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot or as a component of mixed potting media.

The fleshy roots of orchids have high requirements for air inside the pot, and using only soil with strong water retention easily suffocates the roots; jade raw stone happens to make up for this shortcoming. In actual planting, it is generally used together with organic media such as bark, tree fern, peanut shells or leaf mold, which both ensures root respiration and retains enough moisture for the orchid roots to absorb. Coarse granules placed at the bottom of the pot and fine granules mixed into the middle layer is a fairly common arrangement.

Newly purchased jade raw stone often has dust and debris attached to its surface. Before use, it should be sieved, rinsed, then soaked in clean water so it absorbs enough moisture, and after being air-dried until slightly moist, the potting effect is better. Used old material can also be reused after cleaning and disinfection by sun exposure or boiling, but if it has already noticeably powderized, it should be discarded and replaced.

Some orchid growers worry that pure mineral potting medium lacks fertilizer. In fact, jade raw stone itself basically provides no nutrients, and it needs to be supplemented by applying dilute fertilizer regularly through watering. In dry climate regions, when used alone it loses water relatively quickly, so the proportion of organic potting medium can be appropriately increased, and the watering frequency adjusted according to the local environment; after figuring out the pattern of pot soil dryness and moisture, the management rhythm can then be set.
