Youlan Valley is a valley environment suitable for wild orchids to grow
Youlan Valley usually refers to a valley area rich in wild orchid resources and named after orchids; it is also often used as the name of an orchid-themed scenic area or plantation. Such valleys are mostly deep, quiet and humid under the trees, making them ideal habitats for orchid family plants. Many orchid-producing regions in China have similar habitats, though the specific range and scenery differ from place to place.
In terms of environmental conditions, Youlan Valley generally shares several common features. The valley is shaded by trees, with soft diffused light predominating, and the air humidity is relatively high with good ventilation. Fallen leaves and humus accumulate year-round on the ground, and the soil is loose, airy, slightly acidic and drains smoothly, exactly matching the growth needs of orchids' fleshy roots; the mountain mist and the temperature difference between day and night also help orchid seedlings accumulate nutrients.
In such valleys, common Cymbidium species include Chunlan (Cymbidium goeringii), Huilan (Cymbidium faberi), Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium) and Hanlan (Cymbidium kanran), with the species distributed varying by altitude and slope aspect. They mostly grow in patches along forest edges, in rock crevices or under open woodland, with slender plant shapes and a distant floral fragrance. It should be noted that most wild orchid family plants have been included in protected categories, and digging them up and buying or selling them are restricted by law; enjoying the orchids in the valley is fine, but do not dig them up.
For orchid growers, the value of Youlan Valley lies in providing a model that can be imitated. Home orchid growing can draw on the valley environment by using tree shade or shade netting to create diffused light, raising the pots to ensure drainage, choosing sphagnum moss or humus-type growing media to retain moisture and allow air flow, and misting appropriately to raise humidity. The closer the environment is to the native valley, the better the orchids tend to grow and bloom.
