Yi Men San Fu Zi is a horticultural variety of Cymbidium ensifolium (Jianlan). Because its name is catchy and implies a prosperous family tradition, it is beloved by many orchid enthusiasts. Cymbidium ensifolium is a terrestrial orchid of the genus Cymbidium in the family Orchidaceae, with a long history of cultivation in southern China, and it is an important category among traditional Chinese orchids. This variety name easily brings to mind the old tale of three outstanding men from one family, adding a touch of cultural charm to the variety.

As a member of the Cymbidium ensifolium family, Yi Men San Fu Zi retains the typical characteristics of the species. The plant has strap-shaped leaves that are thick and glossy in texture, with prominent pseudobulbs, and its overall growth is relatively vigorous. Cymbidium ensifolium mostly blooms in summer and autumn, and with proper care it can flower several times a year. The flowers are elegant and their fragrance is long-lasting, which is why Cymbidium ensifolium is often also called the four-season orchid.

In terms of care, it prefers a warm, humid, well-ventilated environment with bright, indirect light, and it dislikes harsh sun exposure and stuffy, poorly ventilated conditions. The growing medium should be loose, breathable and well-draining; a mix of bark chunks with Kanuma soil, tree fern fiber and similar materials can be used. Water according to the principle of letting the soil dry between waterings, avoiding long-term waterlogging in the pot that can cause root rot. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, and after flowering, replenish nutrients appropriately.

Propagation is mainly by division, usually carried out after flowering or in spring when temperatures are stable. When dividing, make sure each clump retains healthy pseudobulbs, which helps the plant recover its vigor more easily. In daily management, pay attention to ventilation and humidity, as a stuffy, humid environment can easily attract scale insects, red spiders and leaf spot diseases. Overall, Yi Men San Fu Zi continues the advantages of Cymbidium ensifolium: easy to grow, easy to flower, and richly fragrant, making it very suitable for decorating balconies and courtyards.
