Yilan is a common variety name in orchid enthusiast circles, mostly used to refer to individual Chinese cymbidium (Cymbidium goeringii) plants of the spring orchid type. Among hobbyists it is often mentioned alongside varieties such as Xishen and Shenxianhe, and belongs to the Chinese orchids grown mainly for ornamental purposes. Because plants from different sources may differ in how their flowers present, identifying the variety usually requires judging by a combination of leaf shape, flower color and flower form.

In appearance, the leaves of Yilan are generally slender and upright, the plant form is fairly compact, and the leaf color is deep green and glossy. The flowering period is mostly concentrated in early spring, the flower scape is not tall, and after the flowers open they give off a delicate orchid fragrance, the typical scent type of Chinese orchids. How well the flowers present is closely related to the growing environment; when light and temperature differences are suitable, flower color and petal form tend to be better.

For growing Yilan, choose a loose, airy, well-draining potting medium; granular medium that has been treated before potting up is more conducive to root development and growth. Watering calls for letting the medium dry out between waterings; staying too wet for long periods easily causes root rot, and the saying among orchid growers that "watering takes three years to master" emphasizes precisely the accumulation of experience. Keep the environment well ventilated day to day, provide diffused light, pay attention to appropriate shading in summer and autumn, and a moderately cool environment in winter helps flower bud differentiation and normal flowering.

As an ornamental Chinese orchid, Yilan is suitable for placing on a home balcony or in a courtyard, and also often appears at orchid shows and enthusiast exchange events. With its elegant plant form and pleasant fragrance, it can both beautify the environment and serve as a good choice for getting in touch with Chinese orchid culture. When buying, it is advisable to carefully check the condition of the leaves and roots and pick a plant that is robust and free of pests and diseases, which will make later care much smoother.
