The Italian Man Orchid is a terrestrial orchid in the genus Orchis (Orchidaceae), with the scientific name Orchis italica, also called the Italian Orchid or Naked Man Orchid. It is native to the Mediterranean coastal region, where it often grows on sunny slopes, at the edges of scrub, and in calcareous grasslands, and is a fairly well-known wild orchid there.

Its most distinctive feature is the flower. When it blooms in spring, dozens of small pink-purple flowers open densely along the flower stem, and the lip of each small flower splits into a shape closely resembling a human figure, looking like tiny dolls with arms and legs spread out. This is how it got the name Man Orchid, and it is often presented as a novelty plant. Seen from a distance, the whole inflorescence looks like a string of little people and is extremely recognizable.

For care, it belongs to the tuberous type of terrestrial orchids and prefers a sunny, well-ventilated environment and a loose soil that drains freely and contains a little lime. In the Mediterranean climate, summers are hot and dry, and the plant often goes dormant after flowering; at this time watering should be reduced, keeping the potting soil on the dry side to prevent the tubers from rotting. During the growing season it can be watered and given light as normal, and in winter it should be kept cool; high temperatures combined with high humidity should be avoided.

For propagation, its seeds are extremely tiny and under natural conditions require a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi in order to germinate, so home growers generally propagate it by dividing the tubers. It should also be noted that wild orchids are protected by law in many regions, so when buying, choose artificially propagated stock and do not dig up wild plants. For people who like unusual flowers, this orchid, with its strange flower shape and relatively easy care, does indeed have high ornamental value.
