Xike is the name of a horticultural variety in Chinese orchid (guolan) cultivation and is fairly common in exchanges and transactions among orchid enthusiasts. Most Chinese orchid varieties are named for flower color, petal type, leaf variegation, or an auspicious meaning, and the name Xike carries the auspicious sense of welcoming guests and a home filled with joy. Varieties of this kind are mostly selected from wild-collected orchids (xiashan lan) or fixed through artificial breeding, and once their traits are stable they can be passed down from generation to generation through division propagation.

As an ornamental variety, Xike is identified mainly by petal type, flower color, and fragrance, while its plant form and leaf posture are also taken into account. Traditional orchid types represented by Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid) mostly bloom in early spring, with elegant, understated flower colors and a subtle, far-reaching fragrance; different varieties show slight differences in sepal shape, the way the petals are set, and the color markings on the lip, which are also important bases for enthusiasts judging quality.

In terms of care, Xike has requirements similar to most Chinese orchid varieties: it prefers a loose, airy, slightly acidic potting medium, and before potting the medium can be screened and treated a second time to remove dust and impurities. Watering emphasizes alternating dry and wet periods; as the orchid saying goes, watering takes three years of skill, and it is safer to keep it drier rather than waterlogged. During the growing season, give gentle scattered light, keep the environment ventilated, provide shade and cooling in summer, and allow a proper period of low temperature vernalization in winter, which helps flower bud formation and blooming the following year.

Problems in daily management are mostly related to water and fertilizer: watering too frequently can easily cause root rot and hollow roots, while fertilizer that is too concentrated can easily burn roots and damage seedlings. If leaves turn yellow or the base of the plant turns black, the pot should be repotted in time to check the roots, and after cutting off the rotting roots, fresh potting medium should be used for replanting. Overall, Xike has an elegant plant form and an auspicious meaning, making it suitable as a household potted plant to savor carefully, and it is also a common choice for exchange and collection among orchid friends.
