Asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus) is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant in the genus Asparagus of the family Asparagaceae, native to South Africa, also known as cloud bamboo or asparagus grass. Its slender branches and leaves spread out in layer upon layer like emerald clouds, and its neat, elegant form makes it a common houseplant grown for its foliage.

Asparagus fern is grown mainly for its foliage, though with proper care it can also produce small white flowers and tiny berries. It prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment, dislikes direct strong sunlight and is not very cold-hardy, so placing it in a spot with bright indirect light is most suitable for everyday display.

For care, asparagus fern does best in loose, fertile, well-drained soil; water according to the principle of letting the soil dry out before watering again, and avoid waterlogging in the pot, which can cause root rot. In dry seasons, mist around the plant to raise humidity, and be sure to keep the air moving, since hot, stuffy, humid conditions easily cause yellow leaves.

Yellow leaves are the most common problem when growing asparagus fern, mostly related to too much light, improper watering, air that is too dry or fertilizer that is too strong. Once yellowing is noticed, adjust the care routine promptly and prune away the withered yellow stems to encourage new growth.

Besides its ornamental value, asparagus fern is often used to decorate studies and living rooms, and its foliage can also serve as cut-flower filler. With its light, airy form, a pot placed on a desk adds a touch of elegant refinement to indoor spaces.
