Wanzi is a famous plum-petal variety among traditional Chinese cymbidiums (Chunlan). Along with Song Mei, Ji Yuan and Long Zi, it is counted among the four great famous varieties of Chinese cymbidium, and it also ranks among the old eight varieties. Legend has it that this variety was selected by orchid growers around Jiaxing in Zhejiang during the Qing Dynasty; it also has the alternate name Yuanhu Diyi Mei, and has been passed down for more than a hundred years, enjoying a high reputation in orchid circles.

Wanzi has a medium-sized plant form, with leaves that droop halfway, and a thick, hard, glossy leaf texture. When it blooms, the three outer petals are short and round, with a contracted base and flared corners, tightly edged and cupped; the inner petals are round and neatly clasped like a silkworm-moth's heart, and the lip is short, round and spread out, with a compact and upright center, making it a standard form among plum-petal flowers. The flower color is mainly emerald green, and it does not easily lose shape after being open for a long time, giving a relatively long ornamental period.

For care, Wanzi's habits are similar to those of ordinary Chinese cymbidiums: it likes loose, breathable, slightly acidic potting medium. Before potting, the medium can be washed and disinfected to reduce hidden risks of pests and diseases. Watering should follow the principle of alternating dry and wet, preferring less rather than more; long-term waterlogging easily causes root rot. During the growing period, it should be given mild scattered light, with appropriate shading in summer. Keeping it in a period of low temperature in winter helps vernalization, so that it blooms neatly and vigorously the following year.

As a classic old variety, Wanzi often appears at orchid exhibitions and orchid-enthusiast exchange events, and is also an introductory teaching material for understanding the plum-petal petal type. When introducing it, pay attention to distinguishing its quality: a genuine Wanzi has a neat flower shape with tightly clasped inner petals; if the petals are slender and loose, it may be mixed with an ordinary wild-collected orchid. It is recommended to buy through reliable channels and accumulate care experience step by step.
