Tianhe is a Chinese orchid variety known for its lotus-petal flowers
Tianhe is a common variety name for a lotus-petal flower in the appreciation and cultivation of Chinese orchids, named because its petals are round and full, just like a lotus flower. In the traditional aesthetic of petal types, the lotus petal has always been regarded as a relatively high-grade flower form, so varieties of this kind have consistently attracted considerable attention among orchid enthusiasts.
In terms of floral quality, lotus-petal varieties such as Tianhe usually show three outer petals that are short and broad, with a narrow base and flared corners, petals that are thick and glutinous-smooth in texture, and the two inner petals round, whole and clasping. The whole flower is compact in structure, steady and imposing. The flowering period and leaf posture vary depending on the species to which it belongs, and when judging it, the main criteria are usually whether the open flower is well formed and whether the petal shape is up to standard.
For care, you can refer to the general methods for Chinese orchids. The potting medium should be loose, breathable and well drained; before potting, materials such as bark and Kanuma soil can be soaked and disinfected as a secondary treatment to reduce impurities and pathogens. Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and withholding when wet, and rather less than more. As the saying goes, it takes three years of practice to master watering, so you need to gradually build experience according to the season, the weather and how wet or dry the pot is. Provide bright, diffused light in daily care and keep the environment ventilated, which helps the plant grow strong and improves the quality of the flowers when they bloom.
When buying, it is advisable to base your judgment on the actual open flower, pay attention to differences between plants from different sources, and avoid mistaking an ordinary lotus-shaped flower for a true standard lotus petal. Tianhe has a dignified flower form and elegant leaf posture, and whether you grow it on a balcony or exchange and appreciate it with fellow orchid enthusiasts, it has good ornamental value.
