Stone resources is the general term for all kinds of stone materials in nature that have ornamental, landscaping or cultivation value, covering stones used for garden landscaping, ornamental viewing stones, and mineral stone materials used as growing media. In the landscaping and horticulture industry, the sensible selection of stone resources directly affects both the visual effect of the landscape and the growth performance of plants, so it has always been a topic of interest for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

In terms of categories, common landscaping and ornamental stones include Taihu stone, Lingbi stone, yellow wax stone and Ying stone, among others. Their forms vary greatly, some delicate and intricately perforated, others solid and ruggedly archaic, making them suitable for stacking rockeries and accenting courtyards. Another category is functional stone materials, such as maifan stone, volcanic stone and pumice. These are mostly porous in texture with good air permeability, and are often processed into granules of different particle sizes for plant cultivation.

In terms of application value, stone resources have an extremely wide range of uses. In gardens they can be used for rockeries, revetments, stepping stones and scenic accents, creating the atmosphere of natural mountains and waters; in bonsai making, combining stone with trees and moss can elevate the overall ornamental layering; and in the cultivation of orchids, succulents and other plants, granular stone materials used as growing media can improve air permeability and drainage, which benefits healthy root development.

When selecting stone materials, the type of stone should be determined according to the specific use. For landscaping, the emphasis is on harmony and unity of form and color, while for growing media, attention should be paid to particle size, air permeability, and whether the material is clean and free of contamination. At the same time, natural stone resources are non-renewable, so collection and use should be reasonable and moderate, allowing stone resources to be used for as long as possible.
