Limewater is a calcium hydroxide solution obtained by adding water to quicklime and letting it fully slake. It is strongly alkaline and can inhibit and kill many kinds of pathogens and insect eggs. Its raw material is easy to obtain and its preparation is simple, making it a commonly used disinfecting and protective material in orchards, vegetable gardens, flower cultivation, and livestock and poultry shed management.

To prepare it, slowly add lump quicklime to clean water, stirring while adding, so that it fully slakes and releases heat; then let it stand to settle, and take the clear supernatant liquid for use. When used for whitewashing tree trunks, a small amount of salt or sulfur-based substances is often mixed into the limewater to improve adhesion and enhance the insect- and disease-preventing effect.

In agricultural production, limewater has a very wide range of uses. Whitewashing tree trunks in winter can reflect sunlight, narrow the day-night temperature difference, reduce frost cracking and sunscald, and at the same time kill pathogens and insect eggs overwintering in the cracks of the bark. For acidic soil, applying an appropriate amount of lime can neutralize acidity, supplement calcium, and improve the crop root environment. In addition, spraying limewater or spreading lime powder on the floors and walls of mushroom houses and animal pens is also a common disinfection practice.

Several points should be noted when using limewater: it is fairly alkaline, so it should be avoided for mixing with acidic pesticides and fertilizers, lest it reduce efficacy or cause harm; the solution is best prepared and used immediately, as it will absorb carbon dioxide from the air and become ineffective after standing for a long time; when handling it, it is best to wear gloves to avoid prolonged skin contact, and if it splashes into the eyes, rinse promptly with clean water.
