The carnation, botanically known as Dianthus caryophyllus, is a perennial herbaceous flower in the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae) and one of the most popular cut flower varieties. Its blossoms are layered and full, carrying a delicate fragrance, and it has a long blooming period, often used for floral arrangements and holiday gifts. Overall, the carnation is a relatively easy flower to grow; as long as you understand its habits, even beginners can grow it into good condition.

Carnations prefer a cool, sunny, well-ventilated environment, and dread waterlogging and hot, humid, stuffy conditions. When planting, choose loose, breathable, well-draining soil; you can mix garden soil with leaf mold and coarse sand to enhance air space for the roots. Follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings - wait until the soil surface dries before watering thoroughly. Prolonged moisture easily leads to root rot.

Light is the key factor affecting blooming. Give the plant plenty of direct sunlight every day so it grows compact and sturdy with abundant flowers; insufficient light easily leads to leggy growth and few blooms. It favors a cool climate, so in summer's high temperatures take care to shade it and improve ventilation, and in winter avoid prolonged freezing. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, and supplementing phosphorus and potassium appropriately helps flower bud differentiation and smooth blooming.

Common problems during care include yellowing leaves, root rot and aphid damage, most of which are related to overwatering or poor ventilation. If you spot yellow leaves, promptly reduce watering and check the roots; for pests, you can first rinse with water, and only treat in a targeted way if the infestation is severe. As long as the environment is suitable and management is proper, carnations are not difficult to bring into bloom whether grown in pots or in the ground, making them very suitable for home gardening.
