Jinqianmei (Golden Coin Mei) is a cultivar of Chunlan (Cymbidium goeringii) with plum-petal flowers; its care requires attention to light and vernalization.
In horticultural contexts, "Jinqian" usually refers to Jinqianmei, a plum-petal cultivar of Chunlan (Cymbidium goeringii), a perennial herbaceous plant in the orchid family Orchidaceae, genus Cymbidium. The name is generally thought to come from its petals being round and compact, with the overall shape resembling an ancient coin. Among Chinese orchid enthusiasts, Jinqianmei is one of the more closely followed cultivars and is often discussed for its plum-petal aesthetics.
In terms of morphology, the leaves of Jinqian are mostly semi-pendant, with relatively thick leaf texture and a compact plant form. As a plum-petal flower, it usually has three outer petals that are short and round, with a narrowed base and flared tips, cupped petals, and a short, round lip; the flower color is mostly emerald green or green with a yellow tinge. The flowering period is concentrated in early spring, and the fragrance at bloom is fresh and subtle, giving it high ornamental value.
For care, Jinqian is similar in habit to most Chunlan: it prefers loose, breathable, well-drained potting medium, and can be grown with bark and Kanuma soil mixed with a small amount of humus. For daily placement, choose a semi-shaded environment with plenty of scattered light; in summer, pay attention to shading and ventilation; in winter, it needs a period of relatively low temperature to complete vernalization so that flower buds can open normally. Water according to the principle of letting the medium dry before watering again, keeping it slightly moist; avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.
Propagation is mainly by division, generally carried out after flowering or in autumn together with repotting. When dividing, ensure each clump has enough pseudobulbs and roots, which makes it easier for the divisions to establish. For orchid lovers, Jinqianmei has a well-proportioned flower form; it is both favored by many orchid enthusiasts and a common choice for beginners to learn about plum-petal cultivars.
