An Introduction to the Variety Characteristics and Care Methods of the Golden-Yellow Suzhi Orchid

Jinhuangsu (Golden-Yellow Suzhi) is a plain-hearted (suzhi) variety named for its flower color in orchid horticulture, and belongs to a category among traditional ornamental orchids. Its name comes from the golden-yellow hue of its flowers; the lip is clean and elegantly plain, without any mottled markings, making it one of the more easily recognized among the suzhi orchids.

In terms of ornamental characteristics, the most striking feature of Jinhuangsu is the purity and brightness of its flower color. Against the green leaves, the golden-yellow petals appear bright and warm, and the whole plant has a well-proportioned posture, with a delicate, quiet fragrance when in bloom. It is much loved by orchid growers and is often used for growing orchids on balconies and for display in halls.

As for care, Jinhuangsu has requirements similar to those of other Chinese orchids (guolan). The potting medium should be loose, airy, and well-draining; before use it is best to give it secondary treatment to remove dust and impurities and reduce the risk of root rot. Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and stopping when wet, preferring dryness over waterlogging. Orchids are said to require three years of practice to master watering, which is precisely a reminder for orchid growers to adjust flexibly according to the season, weather, and the condition of the plants.

Routine management should also pay attention to ventilation and light. In spring and summer, provide appropriate shading; in autumn and winter, more scattered light can be given, which helps flower bud differentiation and blooming the following year. Fertilization should be light and dilute, with a small amount of supplementary feeding during the growing season. When the potting medium, water, and light are well coordinated, Jinhuangsu can rebloom year after year, showing the uniquely clear and elegant character of suzhi orchids.
