A Detailed Guide to the Characteristics and Everyday Care of Golden Pothos
Golden pothos is an evergreen climbing vine in the Araceae family, genus Epipremnum, usually regarded as a variegated cultivar of the common pothos (Epipremnum aureum), named for the golden-yellow or creamy-yellow markings on its leaves. It is native to tropical regions, and its stems and vines grow quickly, with aerial roots readily emerging from the nodes; it can both climb and trail, making it a very common foliage plant for indoor greenery.
The leaves of golden pothos are heart-shaped, leathery and glossy, with irregular yellow-white patches scattered over a green base, giving the whole plant an elegant, flowing form. Compared with the ordinary pothos, its leaf color is brighter, and the markings show clearly under indirect light; if kept for a long time in too dark a corner, the patches may gradually fade, and the leaves may even revert to green.
For care, golden pothos likes a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment and dislikes harsh direct sun, so a spot with bright indoor indirect light is sufficient. During the growing season, keep the potting soil slightly moist and mist the leaves and surrounding area often to raise humidity, which makes the leaves glossier and more spread out; in winter, keep it warm against the cold, reduce watering, and avoid the soil staying too wet for long, which can cause root rot. Propagation is mainly by cuttings: cut stem sections with aerial roots and insert them into clean water or a loose medium; they root quickly and have a high survival rate.
Golden pothos can be grown as a trailing potted plant, or allowed to climb a tree-fern pole to form a column shape, and can also be grown in water on a desk, windowsill or similar spot, adding a natural touch to the indoors. Note that its sap contains certain irritating substances, so avoid contact with the mouth and nose when pruning, and prevent accidental ingestion if there are young children or pets at home. Overall, golden pothos is tough, easy to grow and highly shade-tolerant, making it a classic foliage plant suitable for beginners.
