Detailed Guide to the Variety Characteristics and Care Methods of Black Crystal Jianlan
Black Crystal is a horticultural cultivar of Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium), a plant in the orchid family (Orchidaceae) and genus Cymbidium, and among Chinese orchid enthusiasts it is often grown and exchanged as a colored-flower type variety. Jianlan, also known as Four Seasons Orchid, has a flexible flowering period and strong adaptability, and the name Black Crystal is generally thought to relate to its ornamental traits of deep coloration and lustrous appearance.
In terms of ornamental characteristics, the flower color of Black Crystal is noticeably deeper than that of ordinary Jianlan, and is mostly described by growers as a deep purple verging on black or a deep red tone, with the petals carrying a certain sheen under the light. The leaves are green with a solid texture, the plant form is relatively compact, and the overall character is calm and appealing to look at, making it quite suitable for accenting a desk, balcony or courtyard.
For care, the general management approach for Jianlan can be followed. The growing medium should be loose, breathable and well draining, and can be mixed from granular materials such as bark and volcanic stone; a position with bright, diffused light is best, with appropriate shading in summer and maintained ventilation. Water so that the medium dries out between waterings, apply light fertilizer frequently during the growing season, and pay attention to replenishing nutrients after flowering, which helps the plant send up new flower spikes and bloom again.
Common problems mostly center on failure to bloom, scorched leaf tips and root rot. When light is insufficient or nitrogen fertilizer is excessive, the plant tends to grow only leaves without flowers, so diffused light can be increased and the proportion of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer appropriately raised; overly frequent watering or compacted medium can easily cause root rot, requiring timely repotting and root trimming. When purchasing, it is advisable to choose strong seedlings with robust roots and leaves free of disease spots, and to verify the variety source with the seller to avoid confusion with similarly named varieties.
