Guanqi is the name of a variety of orchid, most often seen among Cymbidium goeringii in orchid-growing circles. The name is taken from the elegant pastime of "watching a game of Go," sharing the same lineage of Go imagery as "hand talk" and "the rotted axe handle," and reflecting the literati taste common in the naming of Chinese orchids. The same variety is sometimes called slightly differently in different regions, so when buying it is best to rely on actual flower photos and reliable sources.

As a Cymbidium goeringii, Guanqi generally blooms in early spring, usually with one flower per scape, with clear and elegant flower color and a subtle, far-reaching fragrance, the typical temperament of a Chinese orchid. The leaves are slender and curved, the plant form is compact, and the pseudobulbs are distinct. The details of petal shape and flower color vary slightly with the growing environment and the vigor of the plant, which is also one of the great pleasures of appreciating orchids.

In terms of care, Guanqi has requirements similar to those of other Cymbidium goeringii: the potting medium should be loose, breathable, and slightly acidic, and it should be properly treated before potting up, which can effectively reduce root rot. Watering calls for the "three-year skill," preferring dry over waterlogged, and needs to be adjusted flexibly according to the season and the condition of the plant. During the growing period, give it diffused light and maintain good ventilation; a proper period of low temperature in winter for vernalization is more conducive to flowering.

For ornamental purposes, Guanqi is excellent in both flower and foliage, suitable for a clean display on a desk, and it also often appears at orchid shows and among exchanges between orchid enthusiasts. Common problems are mostly related to overwatering, suffocated roots, and poor ventilation; if scorched leaf tips are found, the moisture status of the potting medium should be checked promptly. Overall, as long as the three key elements of light, water, and ventilation are well managed, even beginners can grow Guanqi into good condition.
