Datunyuan is a lotus-petal-type variety among Chinese orchids (guolan). It gets its name because its flowers are round and full, resembling a reunion, and the name carries an auspicious meaning, giving it a fine reputation among orchid growers. Lotus-petal flowers have long been regarded as a premium petal type in Chinese orchid appreciation, and Datunyuan is one of the representatives of this aesthetic line.

In terms of morphological characteristics, Datunyuan's outer petals are short and broad, with a narrowed base and flared corners; the inner petals (pengban) clasp together in a neat form; and the lip (chunban) spreads out in a dignified way. The flower form holds steady, giving an impression of harmony and grandeur. This flower shape combines a sense of gathering with symmetrical beauty, offering a good ornamental effect whether appreciated as a single bloom or as a whole clump.

In terms of care, it has habits similar to other Chinese orchids, preferring loose, breathable, well-draining potting medium. Before potting, the medium can be given a secondary treatment, sifting out dust and impurities. Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings. In orchid circles it is often said that watering takes three years of skill, and it must be adjusted flexibly according to the season, weather and the condition of the plants. Above all, avoid waterlogging, which causes root rot. During the growing season, give soft, diffused light and keep the environment well ventilated. In summer, shade appropriately and lower the temperature; in winter, protect from cold and reduce watering.

Because of its well-formed petals and auspicious meaning, Datunyuan is suitable for placement in living rooms, studies and other spots as a potted ornamental, and it is also a popular choice among orchid growers for collecting and exchanging. In daily care, if leaves turn yellow or growth weakens, it is mostly related to compacted potting medium, excessive watering or poor ventilation. If you check and adjust promptly, the plant can usually gradually recover its vigor.
