Fuchsia Flowers Look Like Lanterns: Characteristics and Care Methods Explained in Detail
Fuchsia, also known as lantern flower or hanging bell begonia, is a semi-shrub plant of the genus Fuchsia in the family Onagraceae. It is native to Central and South America and is now widely cultivated around the world. Its flowers all grow hanging downward, with the calyx curling upward, shaped like small hanging bells or lanterns, which is how it got its name. The flower colors are rich, commonly red, pink, purple, white and so on, and the sepals and petals often form a two-color combination, giving it strong ornamental value.
The fuchsias grown in horticulture are mostly hybrid varieties, with flowers divided into single and double forms, and flower tubes that vary in length, so their shapes differ. The common type has a red or pink calyx and a purple or blue-purple corolla; when in bloom the two colors set each other off and are very eye-catching. The flowering period is mostly concentrated in late spring and early summer, and if the indoor temperature is suitable, the flowering time can be extended accordingly.
Fuchsia prefers a cool, humid, semi-shaded environment. It fears both high-temperature summer heat and strong direct sunlight, and grows best at temperatures ranging from the teens to the twenties in degrees. In midsummer the plant often enters a semi-dormant state and tends to drop its leaves, so special attention must be paid to shading, ventilation and water control. In winter it should be moved indoors, kept warm and given sufficient light to avoid frost damage.
Potted fuchsia should use loose, fertile, well-drained soil. During the growing period, keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged, and before budding and flowering, apply light fertilizer frequently. Timely pinching and topping can encourage branching, making the plant shape full and producing more flowers. It is suitable for placing on a balcony, windowsill or living room, and can also be grown hanging, making it a very popular ornamental flower. The most common problems in care are leaf drop and root rot caused by high summer temperatures; as long as summer management is done well, you can enjoy its flowers year after year.
