Grass bud is a common term in orchid cultivation, referring to the tender shoots that orchids sprout. Orchid enthusiasts are in the habit of calling the orchid plant "grass," so the newly grown shoots are called grass buds; some also call them new shoots or sprouts. A grass bud may be either a leaf bud that will grow leaves or a flower bud that will bloom in the future, and the two differ slightly in appearance.

In terms of morphology, whether a grass bud is plump or thin and weak is often seen as a signal of whether the plant is healthy. The color of grass buds varies noticeably among different varieties: Cymbidium goeringii (spring orchid), Cymbidium faberi (Faber's cymbidium), Cymbidium sinense (Chinese cymbidium), Cymbidium kanran (cold orchid) and Cymbidium tortisepalum (Lianban orchid) each have their own characteristics; some lean green, some carry red-purple tones, and there are also the relatively rare plain, unmarked bud colors. The bud tip is generally crystal clear and translucent, what orchid enthusiasts commonly call having a "crystal head"; grass buds that are clear and glossy are generally considered to grow better.

As for care, the budding stage is a fairly critical period. At this time the environment should be kept warm and humid with good ventilation, the potting soil slightly moist but not waterlogged, and new buds should be protected from direct strong sunlight. Fertilizer should be applied lightly rather than heavily, as strong fertilizer easily burns tender buds; when repotting or dividing plants, handle them carefully and try not to bruise or break the grass buds.

Common problems are mainly new buds turning black, becoming stunted, or rotting, which are mostly related to overwatering, fertilizer that is too strong, or poor ventilation. If abnormalities are found, adjust the care methods promptly, and if necessary clean away the rotted parts thoroughly. Observing the condition of grass buds regularly can both help judge how the orchid is growing and add a great deal of enjoyment to the process of growing orchids.
