Special-purpose fertilizer refers to fertilizer specially formulated for a particular crop or specific soil conditions. Based on the nutrient requirements of the crop and the soil nutrient status, it is processed by combining nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and secondary and trace elements in a certain ratio. Common examples such as wheat special-purpose fertilizer, corn special-purpose fertilizer, garlic special-purpose fertilizer and fruit tree special-purpose fertilizer all belong to this category.

Compared with general-purpose compound fertilizer, the biggest feature of special-purpose fertilizer is that its nutrient ratio is more targeted. It can closely match the actual needs of the crop at different growth stages, helping to improve fertilizer use efficiency and reduce nutrient waste. For example, garlic special-purpose fertilizer usually takes into account the need for potassium and sulfur during the bulb expansion stage, making the fertilization rhythm better fit crop growth.

In terms of types, special-purpose fertilizers can be divided by use into base fertilizer type and topdressing type, and by form into granular, powdery and water-soluble and other forms. When purchasing, attention should be paid to checking the fertilizer registration information, nutrient content labeling and applicable crop range, and products from reputable manufacturers should be chosen as far as possible. Formulas can also be customized according to local soil conditions.

When using special-purpose fertilizer, the amount should be determined in combination with soil fertility, cropping system and target yield. Generally, a combination of base fertilizer and topdressing is adopted to avoid root burn or nutrient loss caused by a one-time excessive application. Growers with the conditions may first carry out soil testing, and then choose or adjust the special formula accordingly, so that the fertilization effect will be more reliable.
