Melastoma is an evergreen shrub in the genus Melastoma of the family Melastomataceae, mainly growing on hillsides, roadsides and forest margins in the southern provinces of China. Although its name contains the word "peony", it is not related to the true peony of the family Ranunculaceae; it got this name only because its flowers are somewhat similar in appearance.

The melastoma plant is usually half a meter to over one meter tall, with opposite leaves that are rather stiff in texture and often covered with fine hairs on the surface. It blooms in spring and summer each year, with flowers mostly pink or purplish red; the five petals spread open, and the blooms are large and eye-catching, looking very beautiful when they open in masses. After the flowers fade, it produces small spherical fruits that are edible when ripe.

In terms of care, melastoma is robust by nature, preferring a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight, and it also tolerates poor soil and drought, with no strict requirements for soil. Daily management is fairly effortless; when planted in the ground it needs almost no special care, and when grown in pots, simply water by letting the soil dry out between waterings and apply fertilizer appropriately during the growing season. Propagation is commonly done by sowing and cuttings, both of which are not difficult.

Melastoma has large, brightly colored flowers and a long flowering period, making it suitable for accenting courtyards and flower beds, and it can also be grown in pots on a balcony for viewing. Besides its ornamental value, its roots and leaves are often used as herbal medicine in folk practice, and its fruits can be eaten fresh, giving it a fairly wide range of uses. Thanks to its strong adaptability and ease of cultivation, this wildflower of the hills and fields is now entering more and more gardens and courtyards.
