Cactus flowers are the blooms produced by the cactus, a succulent plant in the family Cactaceae. They generally grow from the areoles on top of the round body and mostly open in late spring and early summer. The flowers are usually fairly large, funnel-shaped or trumpet-shaped, and come in many colors such as white, pink, red and yellow. The flowers of some varieties open in the evening or at night. A single flower has a short ornamental period, but over the whole blooming season buds commonly open one after another.

There is a very rich variety of cacti. Common ones include the Easter cactus (Hatiora), the ruby ball cactus (Gymnocalycium), and the peanut cactus, and different varieties differ in body shape, flower color and flowering habits. Some varieties bloom every year with proper care, while others only bloom after the plant has grown to a certain age, which is why flower color and flower shape have also become important references for distinguishing varieties.

If you want a cactus to bloom successfully, light is the key factor. It likes a sunny, warm and dry environment; kept in a dark place for a long time, it often only grows its body without flowering. Watering should follow the principle of watering thoroughly only after the soil has dried out, to avoid waterlogged soil causing root rot; during the growing season, a dilute phosphorus-potassium fertilizer can be applied as appropriate to help flower bud differentiation. In winter, the soil should be kept on the dry side to let the plant enter dormancy and accumulate nutrients for flowering the following year.

A common problem in care is a cactus that is slow to bloom, which is mostly related to insufficient light, overly frequent watering, or a plant that is not yet mature; light can be gradually increased and water controlled. A short bloom time is normal and no cause for worry. Cactus flowers have fairly high ornamental value, and with their round bodies and brilliant blooms they are well suited to being grown in pots to accent balconies, windowsills and desks. In the folk traditions of some regions, the flowers are also used as food or medicine, and it is advisable to consult a professional before use.
