A Complete Guide to the Benefits, Uses and Care of Schefflera
Schefflera is the general name for plants in the genus Schefflera of the family Araliaceae, the most common being Schefflera arboricola and Schefflera octophylla. It gets its name because its palmately compound leaves usually consist of around seven leaflets, and among the general public it is also called duck-foot wood or small-leaf hand tree. It is both a common evergreen foliage plant and a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, offering ornamental and medicinal value alike.
Schefflera stays evergreen all year round, with glossy, shiny leaves. The leaflets are arranged in a ring around the leaf stalk, shaped like an open green umbrella, and the plant has a rounded, full form. It tolerates shade fairly well and is not demanding about light, making it suitable for placement in living rooms, studies and other spots with soft light. It is a very popular foliage plant in home greening.
As for care, Schefflera likes a warm, humid environment and does best in loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the potting soil slightly moist in daily care, and never let water accumulate and rot the roots. In summer you can spray the leaves with water to raise humidity, and in winter take care to keep it warm and protect it from the cold. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, and prune leggy branches at the right time to keep the plant looking neat and compact.
Besides its ornamental use, the stems and leaves of Schefflera can be used as medicine in traditional Chinese medicine. It is traditionally believed to dispel wind and relieve pain, invigorate the blood and reduce swelling, and it is often used to help with rheumatic bone pain and injuries from falls and blows. For specific use, consult a physician. In addition, among the general public it is also regarded as a plant that symbolizes good fortune, and placing Schefflera in a suitable spot at home is believed to be an auspicious symbol of bringing prosperity and blessings to the household.
In daily care, if Schefflera drops its leaves, it is usually related to overwatering, sudden temperature changes or insufficient light, and the care routine should be adjusted promptly. When ventilation is poor, it also easily attracts pests such as scale insects, which should be dealt with as soon as they are found. By keeping the environment well ventilated at ordinary times, the plant will grow with lush branches and leaves.
