The cotton rose (Hibiscus mutabilis) is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the mallow family (Malvaceae), genus Hibiscus, and a common woody ornamental flowering plant in southern China. As can be seen in photos of the cotton rose, its branches are fairly thick, its leaves are large and palmately lobed, somewhat similar in shape to maple leaves, and its flowers are borne singly at the tips of the branches, with layered, spreading petals that make it highly ornamental overall.

The most striking feature in the photos is its flower color. The cotton rose usually opens white or pale pink in the early morning, gradually turns pink in the afternoon as sunlight increases, and becomes even deeper in color by evening, so it can display different color changes within a single day, which is also the impression many people remember most when searching for cotton rose photos.

The cotton rose has quite a few local names, with common ones including furong flower, frost-defying flower, mulian, and ground hibiscus. The name "frost-defying flower" comes from the fact that it mostly blooms in autumn and can withstand the increasingly cool weather, making it a woody flowering plant that can still be covered in blossoms on autumn days.

In terms of use, the cotton rose has large, brilliantly colored flowers and is suitable for specimen planting or group planting in courtyards, beside ponds, along roadsides, and in park green spaces, with especially good results when paired with water features. It prefers a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight, is not strict about soil requirements, tolerates pruning, and is relatively low-maintenance in daily care, so it is very common in the landscaping of southern cities and is also a subject many photography enthusiasts shoot in autumn.
