Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is an evergreen woody vine of the genus Trachelospermum in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). It is widely distributed in southern China, mostly growing on hillsides, forest edges, beside streams, or on rocks. Its stem nodes produce aerial roots that allow it to climb walls, tree trunks, and trellises, which is why it is often used as a vertical greening material in courtyards.

Star jasmine stays evergreen year-round, with leathery, opposite leaves. Its flowering period is mostly between spring and summer, and its small white flowers resemble little pinwheels; when they bloom in masses, they also carry a light fragrance, giving the plant high ornamental value. Besides the common green-leaved type, there is also variegated star jasmine, whose leaves carry pink, white, and green colors, with new leaves showing rich color changes; it is often used as a colorful ground cover or kept as a potted plant.

As for care, star jasmine likes a warm, humid environment with full sun or partial shade, and it is not demanding about soil, though loose, well-drained soil is best. During the growing season, keep the soil slightly moist and avoid prolonged waterlogging; proper pruning can control its growth and encourage branching. It is fairly adaptable, but its cold tolerance is limited, so in winter in the north it is best to take cold-protection measures or move it indoors.

In terms of use, star jasmine can be used for climbing greening on walls, corridors, and fences, and can also serve as ground cover over bare ground or be hung as a potted plant to decorate a balcony. Note that when its branches and leaves are broken, they exude a white milky sap, so it is advisable to wear gloves when pruning to avoid the sap touching the mouth, nose, and eyes; if there are young children or pets at home, it should be placed with even greater care.
