Aloe polyphylla, commonly known as the spiral aloe, is a perennial succulent herb in the genus Aloe. It is native to the high-altitude mountains of South Africa and Lesotho, and is one of the most highly prized ornamental species in the aloe family. Its most striking feature is its leaves arranged in a spiral, giving the plant a neat, symmetrical form, which is why growers call it the queen of aloes.

The spiral aloe has no stem, and its thick, plump leaves range from blue-green to gray-green with fine teeth along the edges. The leaves of mature plants grow in a regular spiral, some turning counterclockwise and others clockwise, making the whole plant look like a green geometric lotus. A well-cared-for mature plant can also send up a flower stalk topped with dense small flowers, making it even more ornamental.

For care, the spiral aloe prefers a cool, airy environment with plenty of light, and it dislikes hot, stuffy conditions and waterlogged potting soil. When planting, choose a loose, breathable, well-draining gritty mix, and water on the principle of letting the soil dry out between waterings to avoid frequent watering that can cause root rot. During the hot summer period, provide some shade and improve ventilation, and in winter keep the potting soil on the dry side, which helps the plant overwinter safely.

For propagation, the spiral aloe is mainly grown from seed, though offsets can also be divided when repotting. However, it grows slowly, so the grower needs plenty of patience. Indoors, place it on a balcony, windowsill, or another spot with good light to meet both its ornamental and growing needs.

Common problems include soft, mushy leaves, which are usually related to overwatering, stuffiness, or poor ventilation. If you notice this, reduce watering promptly, loosen the soil, and improve the environment. As long as you keep it cool and airy with plenty of light and good drainage, the spiral aloe will maintain its beautiful form for a long time.
