A detailed explanation of the benefits and effects of Lancao, helping you correctly understand this medicinal herb
Lancao is a commonly used aromatic medicinal herb in traditional Chinese medicine, usually referring to the dried aboveground parts of the Asteraceae plant Eupatorium fortunei (fragrant thoroughwort), named for the plant's natural fresh fragrance. It should be noted that Lancao in Chinese medicine is not the same type of plant as the ornamental flower orchid; the two differ considerably in source and use, and care should be taken to distinguish between them when purchasing or using them.
In terms of effects, Lancao is mainly characterized by aromatically transforming dampness, awakening the spleen and opening the appetite, and relieving summer heat. It has a fresh fragrance and a mild medicinal nature, and is traditionally mostly used for discomforts such as poor appetite, abdominal distension, and a sticky sensation in the mouth caused by damp turbidity encumbering the spleen; in the summer-damp season it is also often included in prescriptions to help relieve chest tightness, nausea, and similar conditions brought on by summer heat combined with dampness.
In practical application, Lancao is often decocted with aromatic dampness-transforming medicines such as Huoxiang (Agastache rugosa) and Chenpi (dried tangerine peel) and taken as a decoction; the specific dosage and combination need to be determined by a physician according to individual constitution, and long-term large-dose use on one's own is not recommended. Besides medicinal use, the whole Lancao plant is fragrant, and in some regions it is also cultivated as an aromatic plant for courtyard landscaping or adding fragrance indoors, having both medicinal and ornamental value.
There are also several points to note when using Lancao. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes treatment based on pattern differentiation, and those with yin deficiency and blood dryness generally should not use it in large amounts; special groups such as pregnant women and children should consult a professional physician before use. If in daily life you merely want to enjoy its fresh fragrance, you may place it in a ventilated spot to appreciate it, but do not take it internally at will, so as to avoid causing discomfort.
