Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly known as the bottle palm or ponytail palm, is an evergreen small tree in the genus Beaucarnea of the family Asparagaceae. It gets its name from its swollen stem, which resembles a wine bottle, and is also known as the elephant-foot tree or elephant-foot plant. It originates from tropical arid regions, and its swollen stem base can store a large amount of water, making it a typical drought-tolerant ornamental plant. Its leaves are slender and soft, growing in clusters from the top of the stem and drooping naturally, giving the whole plant a very elegant form.

As an indoor green plant, Beaucarnea recurvata has a peculiar plant shape and is easy to grow and manage, and it is often used as a potted decoration in living rooms, studies, offices and similar places. It is not demanding about light, growing best under bright indirect light, and it can also tolerate semi-shaded environments. Because it can store water within its body, it is not prone to problems if you forget to water it for a short time, making it very suitable for beginners at growing plants.

The key to daily care lies in controlling water. Watering should follow the principle of preferring dry over wet, since long-term moisture in the potting soil can easily damage the roots. During the growing season, a little diluted liquid fertilizer can be applied as appropriate; in winter, keep the plant warm and reduce watering to help it overwinter successfully. The soil should be a loose, breathable, well-drained sandy soil, and when repotting, be careful not to damage the swollen stem base.

The most common problem in care is root rot, mostly caused by overwatering or water accumulating in the potting soil. If it is found, the plant should be removed from the pot in time, the roots trimmed, and the soil replaced for replanting. Propagation is mainly by seed, and side shoots sprouting from the base can also be used for division and seedling raising. As long as there is sufficient light and water is properly controlled, Beaucarnea recurvata can maintain a good ornamental appearance all year round.
