Hypericum patulum is a semi-evergreen small shrub in the genus Hypericum of the family Hypericaceae; some sources also place it in the family Clusiaceae. Its branches are slender and spreading, its leaves are opposite, elliptical or ovate, and the plant has a rounded, compact form. It enters its flowering period in late spring and early summer each year. The flowers are bright golden yellow, with five spreading petals and numerous stamens; the slender filaments look like strands of golden thread, which is also the origin of its Chinese name, Jin Si Mei (Golden Thread Plum).

When Hypericum patulum blooms, the flowers are dense and eye-catching, and the ornamental effect is especially striking when it is planted in masses. After flowering it produces capsules, which split open when ripe and release tiny seeds. Because of its bright flower color and natural plant form, it is often used in landscaping as a flower border, hedge or courtyard accent plant, and it can also be grown in pots on balconies or by the front door for people to enjoy.

As for care, Hypericum patulum likes a sunny environment and can also tolerate a certain degree of partial shade; with sufficient light it produces more flowers and the flower color is more vivid. It is not demanding about soil, preferring loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam, and it dislikes waterlogging. In routine management, water moderately, drain promptly during the rainy season, and prune appropriately after flowering to remove spent flowers and overly dense branches, which helps keep the plant tidy and promotes flowering the following year.

For propagation, Hypericum patulum can be grown from cuttings, division or seed, among which cuttings are simple to carry out and are the more commonly used method. Overall, Hypericum patulum is highly adaptable and easy to manage, and with its brilliant golden flowers in season, it is an ornamental flowering shrub worth trying in both park green spaces and home courtyards.
