The golden bell flower is an evergreen shrub in the mallow family (Malvaceae), genus Abutilon, also known as the flowering maple or striped abutilon. It is native to South America and is now cultivated in many parts of southern China. Its flowers hang downward, shaped like little bells or lanterns, which is how it got its name; it is a common flowering plant for courtyards and containers.

The leaves of the golden bell flower are mostly heart-shaped or ovate, with finely serrated edges and a glossy, emerald green color. The flowers are usually orange-yellow, with distinct purplish-red veins across the petals, making them very eye-catching from a distance. As long as temperatures are suitable, its flowering period is very long; with proper care, blooms can be seen almost year-round.

When caring for the golden bell flower, it is best placed in a spot with plenty of sunlight and good ventilation, with light shade provided in midsummer. Water according to the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again, and avoid waterlogged soil over long periods, which can cause root rot. During the growing season, apply dilute fertilizer frequently; after flowering, promptly prune dead branches and overly dense growth to encourage more new shoots and fuller blooming. It is not cold-tolerant, so in northern regions it must be moved indoors for warmth in winter.

In everyday care, the most common problem with the golden bell flower is yellowing leaves, which is usually related to overwatering, insufficient light, a lack of nutrients, or sudden temperature changes. Once the cause is identified and adjustments are made promptly, the plant generally recovers gradually. As long as the environment is suitable and management is proper, the golden bell flower will stay green through all four seasons and bloom continuously, adding a splash of color to a courtyard or indoor space.
