Variegated Winter Daphne (Jinbian Ruixiang) is an evergreen small shrub of the genus Daphne in the family Thymelaeaceae. It is a cultivated variety of winter daphne, named for the pale golden-yellow band bordering the edges of its leaves. Its plant form is compact and its branches are woody, making it a traditional woody ornamental flower. It blooms every year in early spring, with the outside of the perianth appearing purplish-red and the inner side tending toward white. Several flowers cluster at the tips of the branches, and the fragrance is delicate and long-lasting, so it can be enjoyed for its flowers, its foliage and its scent all at once.

In terms of habits, it prefers a cool, semi-shaded environment, dislikes harsh sun exposure, and also fears high temperatures and muggy humidity. Its root system is somewhat fleshy, and its drought tolerance is stronger than its tolerance of waterlogging; above all, it dreads standing water in the pot. For cultivation, use loose, fertile, well-drained slightly acidic soil, and normally place it in a spot with ample scattered light and good ventilation. In summer, shade it appropriately, and in winter move it indoors to protect it from freezing.

The most common problem in maintenance is root rot and heart rot, mostly caused by overly frequent watering, compacted potting soil, or prolonged rain. Watering should follow the principle of preferring dry over wet, and during the rainy season pay attention to drainage. If the leaves become soft and droop, first determine whether it is due to lack of water or damage to the roots, and then treat it accordingly. Fertilization should use light, small doses, avoiding the flowering period and periods of high temperature; strong fertilizer and raw fertilizer easily damage the roots.

Variegated Winter Daphne has a fairly strong scent, so placing it in ventilated spots such as the living room or balcony is most suitable. In the bedroom, it is advisable to place only a small number or move it out at night, so that the heavy fragrance does not affect rest; people who are sensitive to fragrance should be even more careful. As a common Spring Festival potted plant around the New Year, it is suitable both for accenting a courtyard and for beautifying indoor spaces, and with proper care it can bloom on schedule year after year.
