The Uses and Benefits of Plumeria: Both Ornamental and Medicinal
Plumeria (Plumeria rubra, also known as frangipani) is a deciduous small tree or shrub of the genus Plumeria in the dogbane family Apocynaceae. It gets its name because the petals are white on the outside and yellow inside, resembling an egg white wrapping an egg yolk; it is also known as Burmese gardenia and yolk flower. It prefers a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight, tolerates drought but fears waterlogging, and is widely cultivated in South China and Southwest China, where it is a very common ornamental flowering tree.
Ornamental value is plumeria's most prominent function. Its form spreads out gracefully, with thick, sturdy, rustic-looking branches. Its flowering period is concentrated in summer, when the whole tree is filled with fragrance and the blooms are fresh and delicately understated. It can be planted in the ground for courtyard, roadside and park landscaping, and is also suitable for pruning and shaping as a potted plant or bonsai placed on a balcony or by the front door, with outstanding decorative effect.
In terms of medicinal and culinary use, plumeria flowers can be dried and made into herbal tea, and are fairly common in herbal tea formulas in the Lingnan region. Folk tradition holds that they help clear heat and relieve summer heat, moisten the lungs and promote diuresis, making them suitable for drinking in summer. It should be noted that the white milky sap that flows out when plumeria is broken is toxic. If using it medicinally or as food, dried flowers should be used and the amount should be controlled; do not casually pick fresh branches and leaves for use.
In addition, plumeria has a rich, long-lasting fragrance, and the flowers can be used to extract essence, making it one of the raw materials for blending perfumes and fragrances; its wood is light and soft, and in some areas it is also used to make small handicrafts. In daily care, give it sufficient light, water it reasonably and keep it warm in winter, and the plant will grow vigorously, offering both ornamental and practical value.
