Morphological Characteristics of Bambusa multiplex and Key Points for Potted Care
Bambusa multiplex, also known as hedge bamboo, is a clumping bamboo of the grass family (Poaceae) and the genus Bambusa. It is generally regarded as a cultivated variety of Bambusa multiplex, and in some regions the dwarfed type of Bambusa multiplex f. fernleaf is also called Guanyin bamboo. It has a low, compact plant form with slender, densely clumping culms, fine and soft branches and leaves, and slightly drooping leaf tips, giving it an overall elegant and graceful appearance. It is a very popular small ornamental bamboo.
To care for Guanyin bamboo, provide a warm and humid environment. It prefers diffused light and dislikes prolonged exposure to strong sun, so in summer it can be placed in a semi-shaded, well-ventilated spot. During the growing season, keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged; when the air is dry, spray water on the leaves to increase humidity. In winter, take care to protect it from the cold and keep it warm to avoid frost damage from low temperatures. Fertilize with light, frequent applications, mainly using dilute liquid fertilizer, as concentrated fertilizer can easily damage the roots.
Guanyin bamboo is often used as a garden accent and as a potted decoration for living rooms and studies, and it can also be combined with other foliage plants in landscape arrangements. Bamboo has symbolized peace and good fortune since ancient times, and Guanyin bamboo has an auspicious name and a small size, making it suitable for placement on balconies, windowsills, and similar spaces, where it both adds greenery and beautifies the environment.
In daily care, yellowing leaves are fairly common and are mostly related to excessive light, overwatering, or dry air. You can first adjust the placement and watering frequency, then observe how it recovers. In addition, note that the flower market sometimes calls lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) Guanyin bamboo, but the two are not the same plant, and when buying you can distinguish them by the form of the stems and leaves.
