Lantern flower is a common name for ornamental flowers, and in most cases it refers to the fuchsia, so named because its flowers hang downward and resemble small lanterns. It is a subshrub or shrub in the genus Fuchsia, family Onagraceae. In some regions, the Chinese lantern plant (Physalis alkekengi), whose fruit is enclosed by an orange-red persistent calyx, is also called lantern flower. Therefore, in different places the plant referred to as lantern flower may differ; when consulting references or making a purchase, you can distinguish them by leaf and flower-fruit form.

The flowers of the fuchsia are borne singly in the leaf axils of the branches, with slender pedicels, and the corolla hangs downward; the calyx and petals are often paired in colors such as red, purple and white, giving it a distinctive posture and high ornamental value. In an environment with suitable temperatures, its flowering period is long and it can bloom successively. The plant prefers cool, humid and semi-shaded environments, and fears high temperatures and scorching sun, as well as waterlogging in the potting soil.

For caring for lantern flower, choose loose, fertile soil with good drainage, and keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged during the growing season. In summer, when temperatures are high, pay attention to shading and ventilation, and control water appropriately to help the plant survive the summer safely. In winter, it should be moved indoors for warmth to avoid frost. During the peak growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, to promote flowering; after flowering, promptly cut off spent flowers and overly dense branches to keep the plant shape attractive.

Lantern flower is suitable for potted display on balconies and windowsills, and can also be used to arrange flower beds and courtyards. A common problem is leaf drop and bud drop during high summer temperatures, which is mostly related to muggy conditions, poor ventilation or overwatering, and the environment needs to be improved promptly. If what is meant is the Chinese lantern plant, its ripe fruit can be ornamental and in some regions is also used medicinally; before eating or using it medicinally, consult a professional.
