Herbaceous flowers refer to a category of ornamental flowers whose stems have a low degree of lignification and a soft texture, as opposed to woody flowers such as trees and shrubs. These flowers are usually relatively short in stature, grow quickly and come in a rich variety of colors, making them the most common type in home flower growing and landscape greening.

According to their life cycle, herbaceous flowers can generally be divided into three types: annual, biennial and perennial. Annual herbaceous flowers such as Impatiens and marigold are sown in the same year, and flower and set seed in the same year; biennials such as pansy and daisy often complete their growth cycle across the turn of a year; perennial herbaceous flowers include herbaceous perennials and bulbous flowers, such as Chinese peony and tulip, which can bloom repeatedly for many years.

Herbaceous flowers can be propagated in various ways, with sowing being the most common; many species can also be propagated by cuttings, and some flowers can even be grown into new plants from leaf cuttings. In daily care, most herbaceous flowers prefer an environment with ample light and good drainage; watering follows the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again, and appropriate fertilizer and water can be added during the growing season.

During care, attention must also be paid to pests and diseases; common pests such as aphids and red spider mites should be identified and dealt with promptly, and for varieties that are not cold-tolerant, insulation measures should be taken in advance when temperatures drop in winter. Herbaceous flowers have a wide range of applications and can be used for flower bed arrangements, potted ornamental display and cut flower production, making them an ideal choice for embellishing the home and courtyard.
